Long COVID may involve the onset or worsening of tinnitus, which may be associated with headaches or dizziness. The underlying mechanism could be a local inflammation or vascular or immune dysfunction.
How do we test for it ?
There is no specific test to evaluate tinnitus. After you have discussed the problem with your paediatrician or primary care physician, we recommend consulting an ear, nose and throat specialist if symptoms persist or are debilitating.
How is it treated ?
In general, and irrespective of COVID-19, tinnitus is difficult to treat. The treatment consists of vestibular physiotherapy or osteopathic treatment. There are medications that may be used to suppress the sensation of tinnitus in severe or debilitating cases, following a discussion with your paediatrician or primary care physician. Other approaches (sound therapy, rehabilitation therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy and hypnosis) may be suggested.
